Workshop bringing together researchers and industry using computational tools to design high-performance boats.
The design of high performance boats requires that the shape and material of each component is thoroughly analyzed to maximise its performance and the behavior of the entire boat. Due to the significant cost of materials and construction processes, it is not possible to rely only on an experimental approach. Building several boats to finally select the one with the best performance is clearly not a cost — and time — effective strategy. For such a reason computational tools which can reliably simulate and optimize the performance of a boat that has not been physically built are particularly important in this field.
The workshop “Computational tools for virtual prototyping and optimization of high performance boats” aims at bringing together on the 31st of March and the 1st of April at the IMT School, researchers and industrial players using and developing computational tools for the design of high performance boats in sports and competition.
Researchers will present their work in this field and discuss the development of models for the simulation of the fluid dynamic and structural behavior of hulls, sails and hydrofoils, and on the optimization tools which identify the best shapes and operating conditions for each component. The workshop will also feature experienced America’s Cup yacht designers and competition rowing boat designers, which will provide their perspective on how these methodologies are applied on a day by day basis to produce high performance and technologically advanced boats. The workshop is principally addressed to university and PhD students and researchers, but it is open to all interested citizens.
