From May 4 to 8, 2026, the IMT School will offer the in-presence course Numerical Methods for Optimal Control taught by Professor Mario Zanon.
Optimal control focuses on determining control strategies that optimize the behavior of dynamical systems over time. Numerical methods play a key role in solving optimal control problems that arise in engineering, robotics, economics, and many other fields, where analytical solutions are typically not available.
The course is designed for students, researchers, and engineers interested in understanding how optimal control problems can be solved using modern numerical optimization techniques. Participants will explore the formulation of optimal control problems and the main computational approaches used to solve them efficiently.
Topics covered include the fundamentals of optimal control, discretization techniques, direct and indirect numerical methods, and optimization algorithms used for solving large-scale control problems. Particular attention will be given to practical implementation aspects and applications in complex dynamical systems.
